Abstract: Citizens' activities and initiatives are used in this chapter as a lens to describe civic engagement in urban neighborhoods. Investigating this kind of citizens’ contributions yields valuable insights for both planning practice and research. Against this background, this chapter develops a common basis for taking different perspectives on civic engagement for urban development. To do so, it introduces the concept of civil society as arena for respective activities and presents a preliminary understanding of civic engagement for urban development. On that ground, the contribution portrays a descriptive framework that serves as an operative rationale. As a way to explore civic engagement, researchers can focus on 1.) citizens’ individual activities, 2.) activities of citizen initiatives, or 3.) citizens’ activities as a contribution to civil society’s responsibility. Finally, an interface perspective can be used to look at civic engagement from the angle of the planning profession (4.).
